Struggling Portuguese families are fast selling their household gold supplies after record prices and a deepening recession prompted a proliferation of places to exchange the metal for money.
Jamie Sokalsky, who took over the CEO reigns at Barrick Gold in June, has said he will rein in growth and invest only in assets that promise sizable returns.

Barrick Gold in talks with China Gold over African Barrick stake

Confirming an earlier report by the Financial Times, Barrick says discussions are at an early stage and there can be no certainty that they will result in the acquisition of all or part of its holding in ABG.
The gold miner slipped to a surprise Q4 loss on Thursday despite a 14% increase in production, significantly lower than the average 110.
